Questionnaire
Our next task is to create a questionnaire for prospective audience. This will enable us to find out people's prefences of films, what works and does not, what is in demand etc. This will help us decide whether the film we want to make would generate enough interest.
Initial Idea
For our preliminary storyboard project Marêmé came up with the idea of using a book she had read previously called "The Stars' Tennis Balls'" by Stephen Fry. It is about a boy called Ned who runs into some trouble when he gets on the wrong side of some supposed school "friends". Having read the book we decided that we would both like to take the idea forward and use it for our major project so we made sure we both read it and understood it before we made the decision. We investigated a few ideas before we came to this decision these included “Borderliners” by Peter Hoeg that Marêmé read and found some interesting quotes that we could incorporate into our story. Beth investigated using the poem “Hitcher” by Carol Ann Duffy because it can be annotated in a way that would be interesting to film, and has a strong storyline. However after looking into the possibilities we decided we would use Steven Fry’s “The Stars Tennis Balls” as our main project.
Borderliners
The events that occur in "Borderliners" revolve a lot around time and the fact that time seems to be controlling everybody's actions. Peter, the main character goes to a school in Denmark and claims they control everything using linear time. Peter and his two friends take an epic journey throughout the book to find out the secrets between their educational system and also find out what the school is benefiting from it.

Textual analysis 19th November
We watched clips from Harry Potter and also a University student’s project called Misdirection by Tom Edwards. Through watching the clips we discovered some techniques that we would like to use in out project. One of the techniques was to do with the dream sequence from Harry Potter Order of the Phoenix where they used a whoosh sound affect to draw the audience into the dream. The director chose to use quick cuts and match-on-action to flick between Harry Potter and his dream. Showing him sweating and tossing and turning shows the conventional idea of a horror nightmare. The following of the snake in the reflection shows a contrast from reality and creates an enigma for the audience. The colour wash furthermore signifies the difference between reality and the dream sequence. We could use this in our project if we wanted to include a flashback or a memory. The camera rarely stops moving which makes it easy to watch as it keeps the audience engaged. We feel more fluid camera movement would improve our filming technique.

The Darjeeling Limited
We looked at a number of different film clips in order to accumulate techniques that we could use for our project. The first film we looked at was called “The Darjeeling Limited”. Elements of this we could use were the use of a prominent colour throughout. The yellow colour saturation shows part of the Indian culture and setting. The way the opening is shot makes the audience believe The Business Man (Bill Murray) is the main character until Peter L. Whitman (Adrien Brody) appears in the shot. It becomes apparent he will be the main character because of the way he is dressed and the way he is shot as we see his full face which the camera lingers on unlike the other character. The title is incorporated into the film on the end of the train. We could use the same technique in our film to make the titles more interesting. The use of slow motion to extend the act of getting on the train creates anticipation for the audience and is a good technique to use.
The Girl On The Bridge (La Fille Sur La Pont) 1951
The director has created tension in this scene by a sharp sudden contrast between loud music and then sudden silence. They have used selective sound when they throw the knifes to highlight the extreme danger she was in.
The Hills Have Eyes
We watched the opening 10 minute sequence to “The Hills Have Eyes” continuing our textual analysis work. The use of mini scares built up the enigma towards bigger scares and rather than trying to scrae the audience straight away the film establishes the characters and draws the audience into the digesis.

Risk Assessment
I found i had only one risk which was the taking of the pills. I swapped them for tic-tacs but had to make sure i informed Gina of the swap. I washed out the bottle and lid of the paracetamol bottle to make sure there were no powder remains.

I only need two characters in my film and decided rather than holding open auditions i would ask someone from AS Level drama who i knew could act and also who i knew i could rely on. I decided on Gina Murrell as Isabelle as she is very reliable, a good actress, looks the right age and would be perfect for the part. Gina is a pretty girl with averge features. i wanted someone who would not stand out in a crowd when in school uniform and Gina fit this alias.
I then decided to use Nicole Hunt as the sister, Maxine. It is only a small part so i did not need a particularly good actress just somebody i could rely on.

Location Shots
i used the stairs in my house again to carry the theme throughout thew house as the place Isabelle's mum finds her suicide note.
I used a table in the Roebuck Hotel to use as Isabelle's desk as i wanted somewhere that had plain walls.
I used the science corridor at college because i wanted random people walking along the corridor as they would in a school.
I used my front room for the entrance os Isabelle's mum because i wanted the house theme to be seen throughout the house.
This is a location shot of my bedroom which i used to film the shots where Isabelle is taking the pills. this is a typical teenagers bedroom with not many expensive gadgets.Music
My theme is a drama film leaning towards a melodrama so music was very important to my film. I wanted to use non-diegetic sound to create enigma and set the scene and if possible wanted to use no diegetic sound as i felt it would not fit. I wanted to find a song that told the perfect story in its lyrics and instantly thought of Evanescence. I looked on the Internet at all the Evanescence lyrics until I found what I thought was the perfect song- Goodnight. The song summed up Isabelle’s actions perfectly and the sad, long drawn out lyrics matched her mood and the mood of the film perfectly.

I also decided to incorporate System of a Down Lonely Day as well, as I wanted a mix of music rather than just one constant song throughout. I cut Lonely Day because it was too long and faded the end out as Isabelle’s life is fading away. I put echo’s throughout which increased towards the end. This gave it a more eerie feel as the sound and picture are distorted like Isabelle’s mind.
